I have been coming to Mackinac Island since I was a boy and I have visited with many different individuals both family and friends. I have stayed on island and off in many different venues. Each time I visited, I experienced the island in a different way. Time slows as you allow it to. If you take the time to look around, you see new things in ever different ways. Even nature presents itself differently. You cannot describe it. You must experience it for yourself, again and again. Fudge or no fudge, you take something with you every time you leave the island.

I grew up here, and our family moved away from Pellston in 1993 for work, and a part of my heart is still right there always!
I love everything about the island & the people. I started going to Macinac Island at age 4. My oldest sister made her college tuition working at the Grand Hotel, and I got to stay with her on many weekends. As, a young wife & mother (at that time), I had worked for Wolverine Stages transportation, thru the airport in Pellston, and would drive people to the boat dock to catch their ferry to the Island. My grandest memory was driving Christopher Reeves family to catch a private boat to go to the island. What a privelge & great experiences for me. I
continued to take each one of my children to re-live history. Now, our last child born out west here, is going to get that very same chance to enjoy the island (for her 16th birthday)...as we are making a month stay vacation plans for 2011,to be back home again! I just can't wait to say...are we there yet?!
If you have never been to Mackinac Island...it is a paradise beyond your imagination, it is a must see!

My husband, daughter & granddaughter & I visited Mackinac Island yesterday. We have been before when our own children were young and loved it. Since my daughter & granddaughter decided to vacation in Michigan (they live in Portland OR)we thought this would be a great experience, especially for our granddaughter who is 5 and a half. She is an animal lover and especially loves horses. Our ride over on the Arnold boat was great, Orr-Kids bicycle was exceptional in helping us choose the appropriate equipment for our bike ride around the island in the morning. It was wonderful! We made reservations at Jack's Livery stable to rent our own 4-person carraige for the afternoon. We thought this would indeed be the highlight of our trip! Our horse was Belle. Unfortunately, we left only a few minutes after a 2 person carriage being pulled by the horse Maggie. Maggie
moved at a snail's pace. Come to discover later her right rear foot was hurting. In fact, she was limping. Belle would not pass her so we were stuck behind Maggie's carraige. The horses are trained to follow each other.
We called Jack's livery stable with our cell phone. They basically did NOTHING
to alleviate the situation. Our horse was breathing down the necks of the carriage in front of us and finally a 3rd carriage was stuck behind us. We could have walked faster around the island. We finally made the halfway point where Ted pulled Maggie (the 1st horse) off the path and we could proceed on our way. Then Belle got really sporadic. She'd go for a while & then completely stop & neigh at us. She did this countless times. It was a totally frustrating experience. My daughter was in tears from the whole situation. She had planned this wonderful experience for her daughter and it was anything but that. My husband spoke with the personnel at Jack's Livery stable and basically they told him that these are injured horses and we shouldn't expect
too much. I consider this cruelty to animals. I am writing this to alert you to this and hopefully make others aware of this situation so they will not have the same thing happen to them. I would appreciate a response to my comments.

My Daughter and 2 Granddaughters and I just got back from Mackinaw,we could only stay 3 days, but in those 3 short days we enjoyed everything including the Island,we didn't get to do all the things we wanted to,but this gives us an excuse to go right back up there again next summer hopefully for longer.Leaving Mackinaw that last day was sad for us,we wished we could live up there.Very beutifull and people so friendly, all the horse and buggy drivers on the island were very friendly, comical and very informative about the island and would answer everyones questions.

I am a third-generation Islander. My parents and grandparents are buuried on the Island, where I myself hope to be laid to rest. I went to school in the Thomas W. Ferry School (Indian Dormitory). I taught in the "New School" from 1978-1987. The house I lived in was built by my grandfather Paul Michalke and a local builder named Frank Rounds. I met my wife while working at the Grand Hotel as houseman during my college years. Joan and I both love the Island dearly. It is truly said that "Whom God loves, He gives a home on Macknac." There is no more beautiful place in the world. While it was necessary for us to leave and settle elsewhere, neither of us has lost one iota of our affection and respect for the Islanders and the Island. Be assured that a visit there will more than repay the money you spend to get there. Only remember that it is necessary to do more than just visit Main Street. Take a carriage and see the interior of the island or tour Fort Mackinac and immerse yourself in its history. Once you leave, you will carry a part of the Island wherever you go.
