Father
Jacques Marquette
Father Jacques Marquette established the first permanent
mission to the local Chippewas on the north side of the Straits at St.
Ignace in 1671. With Louis Joliet, a French explorer of what is now the
Midwestern United States, this Jesuit achieved lasting fame as the discoverer
of the upper Mississippi River in 1675.

Children and seagulls are frequent visitors to Marquette Statue on Mackinac
Island. This seagull, perched on top of Father Marquette's head, has an
impressive view of the Straits of Mackinac
