Arch
Rock
One young gentleman particularly enjoyed climbing
on this beautiful rock formation one hundred feet above Lake Huron on
the east side of the Island. An historic photo shows the young Eagle Scout
Gerald Ford standing atop Arch Rock in 1929. The future president of the
United States visited Mackinac Island with his scout troop and returned
to the Island for a two day visit as president in 1975. Today both boy
and girl scout troops rotate stays in the Scout Barracks behind Fort Mackinac
in the summertime. During their week-long visits the scouts conduct flag-raising
ceremonies and assist visitors at the historic sites.
